Textile Recycling Chain in Crisis: Corertex Raises the Alarm – “Without Immediate Action, Autumn Will Be Devastating”
The Corertex Consortium, a key representative of the textile reuse and recycling sector, issues a stark warning to national and European institutions: the industry is in serious distress, worsened by market stagnation and rising operational costs. Without swift and concrete measures, the entire supply chain could face collapse by autumn.
“Businesses in the sector are at a breaking point,” says Raffaello De Salvo, president of Corertex. “Operators working daily in reuse and recycling can no longer cover processing costs due to the sharp drop in market prices and the lack of structured public support. Urgent government intervention is needed to protect jobs, know-how, and a system that stands as a European benchmark for circular economy practices.”
Corertex highlights a significant slowdown in recent months across the sector: full warehouses, delayed commercial flows, and a contraction in demand. “We are witnessing a gradual shutdown of operations,” adds De Salvo. “Facilities can no longer manage the volumes collected. There is a real risk of undoing decades of environmental and social commitment.”
The Consortium renews its call for the creation of a permanent institutional working group on textile reuse and recycling, involving the government and major stakeholders, to define a long-term strategy that shields the sector from cyclical crises and ensures operational continuity. “We need financial support measures, innovation incentives, and a stable regulatory framework,” concludes the president. “Only through such action can we prevent a shutdown and continue offering sustainable solutions for both the environment and the economy.”
