Fabio Marseo, vice president of Corertex, emphasizes the historical and reputational importance of the textile sector in Prato, noting that his family has been active in this field for over a century. In response to the new Italian regulation on the separate collection of textile waste, the historic textile district of Prato formed the Textile Reuse and Recycling Consortium, Corertex.
Marseo describes Corertex as a consortium comprising over 20 companies, dedicated to both the initial collection and the recycling of fabric. Corertex manages to reuse 65% of the collected materials, recycle 31%, leaving only 4% as waste.
The vice president highlights the importance of social cooperatives within the consortium, clarifying that textiles thrown into bins are not donations but waste to be processed. Marseo criticizes the negative perception that often surrounds the textile recycling sector, comparing it to the more accepted practice of plastic waste recycling, and laments the lack of a profitable business model for textile recycling due to moral criticism.
He concludes by reiterating the importance of preserving the sector’s reputation and properly informing the public to bridge the gaps in knowledge that can arise.
